Berthillon

Another twist of fate...I was on the Ile St.-Louis this morning. Does one really have a choice? Berthillon beckons...
And of course Caramel au beurre sale aka CBS.
But wait. No Caramel au beurre salé today. Flavors are changed daily. I was not prepared for this!
There IS Caramel Nougatine the server suggestes...
Oh no...but on second thought this is Berthillon who can do no wrong where ice cream or caramel is concerned.
So I throw caution to the wind and get the Caramel Nougatine which turns out to be just fine. OK maybe more than fine. Terrific! Frankly I can't even tell the difference.
It seems Berthillon can do no wrong when it comes to anything caramelized like these little chocolate-covered caramel pops. I had to buy one to use as a prop in today's watercolor except I ate it...just now. Uh oh
These caramelized apple tartelettes with salted butter are absolutely fab I promise you. I bought one of these. I just ate it too...
I did NOT buy their highly reknown tarte Tatin. I would have but I ran out of money thank gawd!
I've been eye-balling their tarte tatin for years the way some men ogle women. So far I've resisted but who knows when the day will come and resistance will give way...
A gentle hint PBers. If you are going to shoot inside a shop do buy something for heavens sake. It makes it so much easier all around.
Berthillon definitely fits into the oldie-worldie category of patisserie traditionnelle...
They have a lovely tea salon you might not know about.
The fact is that Berthillon's single dips are about the size of a golf ball. I did have just enough change to go back and get a second Caramel Nougatine cone. Besides there was no line. Besides one must take advantage of opportunity when it knocks no? It helps if you're good at rationalizing in Paris...or maybe it doesn't.

The Perfect Scoop

Paris may be the ice cream center of the world believe it or not.

A walk down rue Montorgueil(1st) offers you at least FOUR ice cream providers - Charles Chocolatier (shown), Deliziefolie , Maison Stohrer, Jeff de Bruges.

 How to choose?

I picked the 1st glacier/ice cream maker I encountered, Charles Chocolatier. Plus the sound of flavor/parfum cocoa gingimbre appealed to me deeply.

Do you feel inclined to compare your cone/cornet with the standing model out front too?

I flirted with this issue of Gault Milhaut in the train station. You can read here the PDF on the top 45 ice cream makers in France.

Elle A Table magazine had their own story on the top 10 flavors of l'ete in Paris. I ripped it out on AirFrance going over and forgot about it. I just wandered and ate whatever was in front of me.
c'est la vie

Wearing 'ice cream' colors at this time in Paris could not be more de rigueur in case you're indecisive what to wear on your visit.

Fauchon has beautiful ice cream colored boxes. I tasted a pistache at their sidewalk ice cream freezer but forgot to shoot it.
Oh woe is moi.

Back on rue Montorgueil, Jeff de Bruges was dispensing soft serve ice cream, not my favorite so I didn't taste and I have some regrets. To call yourself a true ice cream connossieur you have to be willing to taste everything in my opinion.

Out of sheer curiosity I tasted Persian Saffron ice cream since I made it several times while visiting the chateau and Karen Wheeler/Biff. Honestly I think I like mine better.

I didn't taste Pierre Marcolini's cornet either sadly.
He was closed...

I missed out on Pierre Herme's ice creams - another tragic loss.

I raced inside to grab an Ispahan pastry, of which there were many it turned out. Plus the shop was empty!
Quelle surprise?
In no time it was jam-packed.

When I got outside and noticed the ice cream windows I wanted to go back in but the crowds discouraged me and I didn't want to injure my precious Ispahan in the process. You can't always get what you want they say...

You can easily make your own ice cream with David Lebovitz' delightful The Perfect Scoop and you don't have to own an ice cream maker to do so. It's one of the best secrets on the planet next to all the ice cream in Paris.

Summer In The City

 Summertime has hit Paris enfin.

 Where ever you look

 Summer is suddenly ever present.

Anne Maisonneuve has FAB summery earrings. I bought the new tapestry tassle earring she was wearing. It's not just T-shirts you know.

Pots of delicious sorbet fill Arnaud Larhrer's vitrine. How is it every single patisserie and boulangerie in Paris is selling ice cream in one form or another? This is why I HAVE to move to Paris.

Raimo, one of Paris' oldest glaciers, serving up cornets since 1947.

Naturallement I had to taste their pistache.

 Whoops!
That's what happens summertime in the city.

Nearby pistache sandals..a better option perhaps?

Will she eat a savory herbaceous quiche from Pain du Sucre?

Me, I'd like to take a bath in frozen 'bio' framboise from Picard to cool off...

A French girl iPading in a cafe on Sunday...

Another French girl heads off to Paris Plage in just a sarong and brief top, naturallement tout en bleu.
French Girls are not only impeccable.
They know how to hold onto their ice cream cones...
BONNE ETE PBers!

Pascale le Glacier

On Saturday Louise of Raids-Patisserie took us for a grand parcours/tasting of ice creams - 5 flavors!

Have you heard of Pascale le Glacier?
I bet not.
17 rue Bois-le-Vent 75016
Metro: Passy

Yet he provides the best ice creams to many, many restaurants and has won prizes for the special quality of his fruity, fresh seasonal sorbets.

 Over 60 parfums!

Not cheap and you can't buy just a cone here

Intense fruitiness is guaranteed.
Louise chooses our flavors to taste.

Enfin we make a picnic on a banc/bench in jardins de Ranelagh. Chocolat has an almost mousse-like mouthfeel
Vanille is full of vanilla bean and exquisite - not too sweet either
Framboise could not taste more fresh or like real raspberries
Abricot is a bit 'farinee'/floury Louise declares..
Peche/peach is superbly peachy with a soft delicate mouthfeel

Being in France is a constant challange

 To all the senses

 Visually...

Hugo and Victor feeds the eyes and the tastebuds.

Guerlain parfums are delicious for the nose...

A feast for the eyes awaits in most vitrine/window

You feel constantly like a little kid.
Fresh and spontaneous.
Just open your eyes and enhale!
